As an SLP, I believe it is important to create a trusting and supportive environment for the client and the family. In treating Childhood Apraxia of Speech, I start by building rapport, trust, and comfort with my client. As I work with the client and their caregivers, I will focus on sounds and words based on their sound inventory (sounds they are producing and not producing), and function words that are important to the families. Sessions will use a variety of techniques to tackle the goals for the client and the family. These techniques include principles of Motor Learning and Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC). These will focus on lots of practice! This practice will include shaping and moving gestures while also increasing steps of difficulty in syllable shaping and words including imitation, repetition, simultaneous production, and spontaneous production with varying prosody and inflections. All of this will include feedback and support on the productions.
Caregivers, Parents, and Families are extremely important in Speech and Language therapy. They are the ones that know their child the best, and are essential in the assessment, treatment, and support of the child. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to provide syllables/words that are important to them, as well as be involved in therapy to encourage appropriate practice outside of therapy.
AAC can be a valuable component in speech and language therapy, especially in severe CAS cases. AAC can be used for clients to show ways to communicate their wants and needs when speech may not be easy. AAC (low/high tech) can be used while also encouraging verbal output.
