Therapy is highly individualized and rooted in EBP (Evidence-Based Practice). Treatment is heavily dependent on the child. For young children, we begin implementing the building blocks needed for intensive blocked practice. This is often play-based and repetitive in nature while using selected words individually motivating and unique to your child's interests and needs. We often focus on building the foundation skills needed to optimize imitation skills to later follow more structured practice in effort to maximize high frequency trials. For older children, we may work on prosody deficits, complex sentences and high frequency repetitive trails tailored to their functional needs and interests.
Parents are often present in the treatment room and are provided detailed explanations of what CAS actually is and why I may choose to approach treatment in a specific way based on their unique child's needs. The goal is to have parents actually understanding what CAS is and leaving my office feeling confident in both the diagnosis and treatment plan set into motion. I want my families to feel empowered!
Most young children begin with low-tech AAC alternatives to first determine if they have a preference as it relates to their preferred communication modality (many children do!). High-tech devices begin to be utilized for children that demonstrate a heavy interest in AAC, exhibit more moderate/severe speech praxis issues and are able to cognitively navigate the complexities of the chosen program.
