I recommend frequent and intensive speech intervention once CAS is suspected and then diagnosed. I typically recommend frequency between 3-5x/week with recommended home practice as well. Treatment focuses on speech movement patterns not speech sounds. I provide multisensory cues to assist with production, including tactile-kinesthetic prompts (PROMPT), auditory/verbal cues, visual cues, models, etc. I include principles of motor learning theory into my treatment sessions and home programs, including blocked practice, random practice, etc. I provide specific feedback to children including knowledge of their performance.
I involve parents in every step of the evaluation and treatment process. Many parents sit in on my evaluation and treatment sessions. For those that do not, I always include them at the end of my sessions for review of what was targeted, the progress that was made and recommendations for continued home practice. I make myself available to provide outside resources and am always available for questions if they arise outside of the therapy room.
I have used various forms of AAC with children over the years to improve functional communication skills while a child's spoken language abilities and intelligibility of speech improve. I have experience using sign language, PECS, functional objects and pictures, iPad communication systems such as TouchChat and Proloquo to Go, as well as high tech systems such as Dynavox, etc.
