I utilize a wide variety of behavioral strategies including prompt hierarchies, fading, shaping, reinforcement, pacing, etc. I focus on syllable shapes and using successive approximations. My goal is to increase functional and meaningful communication so I try find the balance between discrete trials of specific syllable shapes and words that are functional in a kids everyday life. I utilize structured practice as well as the opportunity to practice those same targets during play or in a more natural situation.
Parents are involved from the initial evaluation. When possible, I include parents during therapy sessions. . I think the intensity and type of parent involvement is dependent on the child and the parent. I also like to give the parents ideas for specific times of the day that may elicit certain target words or sounds. I think by giving parents more direction and more specific examples of how and went to practice sounds, they are more inclined to do so.
I have utilized an array of AAC for children with CAS - including manual signs/gestures, high-tech devices and PECS. I believe its is important to utilize AAC when appropriate to give a child a more functional and efficient way to communication while building verbal output.
