Every child is treated individually. The information gained from the assessment determines each child's treatment plan. Throughout therapy, it is important to use movement, cueing, syllable shapes, and prioritize specific articulators and phonemes. More specifically, I use a combination of PROMPT and DTTC to elicit and facilitate target production. All sessions begin with a motor phoneme warm up where the speech targets are introduced and practiced several times for the first 5-7 minutes of the session. Speech targets are selected based on the motor phoneme links chosen from the motor speech hierarchy. Once the motor phoneme warm up is completed, two to three activities are selected, and the targets practiced throughout the motor phoneme warm up will be used throughout these activities. Differentiated levels of cueing is provided during the motor phoneme warm up as well as throughout the activity. For example, if the child requires tactile cueing, PROMPT will be used to map in the sounds of the targets or provide broad support to the child depending on the level that the child is at. After the child produces a target, online shaping is used to determine what levels of support are needed. The number of targets, syllable shapes, and phonemes depends on the severity of the child. Frequent therapy and maximizing the number of trials is important during this type of treatment.
Parents are encouraged to observe and/or participate throughout the therapy sessions as they are an integral part of the therapy program and their child's success. At the end of each session, the child's progress towards goal attainment is discussed and "homework" is provided to promote generalization of skills.
I use AAC early throughout therapy and in conjunction with speech for children with AAC. I have extensive experience and training in assessing and implementing static and dynamic AAC with children.
