My therapy approach is fun and interactive so we are feeling engaged and successful. We focus therapy around interests and practice specific words within these interests so they can feel motivated and begin communicating with success. For example a child that loves Paw Patrol may practice "Paw" as the target word so they can request this toy at home. While practicing their words we provide maximum strategies such as; giving instant feedback ("round your lips", "nice try"), and provide verbal, tactile and visual cues to help the child learn the correct movement pattern to say their words. As this movement becomes more accurate we will add "Bye Paw", "Hi Paw", "My Paw", "No Paw". A child with moderate to severe CAS will practice between 5-7 words approximately 60 times each during our session. With this many repetitions the setting must be fun and engaging for the child to be motivated to speak. It is my goal is that each child is excited practice their speech with me.
Parents are sitting with me in therapy, learning the cues and the targets to practice, and how to be specific with feedback.
We pair the target speech stimuli with the AAC picture to teach requests/protest for the object. If the child wants to eat something then we will pair the word "eat" with the picture for 'eat' and press the picture while practicing the movement VC pattern for "eat"
