I approach therapy with functional communication in mind. I plan for therapy based on a child's current abilities, taking into account the sounds and structure of syllables they are able to produce. I outline and update the prompting method that fits a child's needs (e.g. verbal, visual, tactile cues). From here, I incorporate repeated practice into session activities that fit with individual interests. For example, we may select 3 simple words that can be used across all communication environments during a game of "hide and seek" (e.g. go, in, my).
Parents are involved in observing session activities with specific functional word sets/syllable shapes/ phonemes involved. When parents are not available to observe sessions in person, I provide video models of specific prompt types (e.g. parameter, visual, verbal) that can be used in the home with a list of words that can be the focus for that week. Depending on the family, I may also provide a specific printout for an activity to target in the home. In addition to home practice ideas, I often refer families to online resources (e.g. ASHA, apraxiakids.org, PROMPT) to gain further information about specific questions.
I approach intervention with AAC in mind from the beginning. I provide multimodal communication opportunities with visual picture representations, I may focus on gestural communication as a goal. Additionally, if a family expresses interest in high tech options after my consultation, I guide them to funding resources and identify the best app for their needs.
