Initially, I work to build a fun and trusting environment and relationship with the child. My treatment approach is motor-learning based and focuses on facilitating the accurate motor movements for speech production with multi-sensory cueing (verbal, visual, tactile). In therapy, we will use a small subset of target words comprised of a variety of syllable shapes (increasing the complexity as therapy progresses). I use a child-centered approach and adjust therapy targets as needed. I love to use motivating materials that help us to incorporate literacy, pragmatics, and language skills.
Parent involvement is a vital key to the therapeutic process! I encourage parents to be active participants in the child’s plan of care, including observing, selecting functional targets & providing mentorship for home carryover. Each therapy session involves parent education on the multi-sensory cues provided, how the child is performing, how to elicit target practice in the home environment and what the next stage of therapy will look like. I love collaborating with the families throughout all stages of therapy!
I have utilized both high and low tech AAC for children with CAS to supplement communication needs. Decreasing the overall communication frustration & creating functional communication is key for the child’s success, so I have implemented other forms of communication for the family & child to use until verbal communication is more consistent. I am familiar with basic sign language, PECS, LAMP, TouchChat, & Proloquo2Go. I explain to families that the AAC system will not replace their child’s verbal communication but help augment verbal communication production.
