Repetition is key in order to introduce and generalize novel motoric plans. In order to develop an appropriate and functional therapeutic intervention to treat CAS, a skilled clinician must first determine the child’s current speech sound inventory, specifically including the positioning and syllabic patterns in which the child is most successful with productions. We use motoric strengths to build on motoric need; in other words, a skilled clinician should use the current inventory to expand success with targets to a variety of syllabic patterns and word positions. Function is key. We like to include family in selecting functional, appropriate level, targets, in order to promote communication and generalization of learned skills.
Treatment plans are unique and specifically tailored to the strengths and weaknesses of each patient. A combination of linguistic and motor based approached are employed in order to maximize notable speech gains! We strive to include phonological awareness skills in to our sessions, when appropriate.
Treatments plans are fluid and should be consistently monitored/adjusted to reflect gains, while working with those diagnosed with CAS.
We strive to implement a massed, blocked therapy intervention schedule in to begin the therapy process and maximize gains; We fade and adjust our session frequency, as appropriate.
Our approach to therapy is family-centered and whole child first. We meet are clients where they are and recognize the hard work that goes in to each session! We utilize a play-based clinic model. Throughout the therapy process, we aim to involve all capable members of the family unit to some extent. We approach intervention with generalization of skills being the #1 goal – We believe that this generalization takes place the quickest, from consistent family involvement, and on-going family education throughout the therapy process. Parents are encouraged to attend the entirety of every Speech Therapy session that their child works through. CAS therapy is challenging work! We help parents to develop their “clinical ear” by ensuring that they are aware of the target we are addressing, as well as how to best cue their child’s productions.
