Functional communication is the most important goal for a child with moderate to severe CAS. With that in mind, I consider the child's phonemic inventory and work with the child's family to identify functional targets that are attainable. With a method like DTTC and the principles of motor learning, we use 3-5 functional word targets with at least 100 productions per session, which are incorporated into games or toys to make session participation as motivating as possible. Intense practice is essential. Because of this, I often recommend 3-4 sessions per week.
Parental involvement is crucial to success in selecting targets, monitoring carryover, and facilitating practice opportunities. Parents are provided with frequent updates regarding progress, and are involved in functional word target selection. Another important aspect of parental involvement is education, support, and training for communication strategies.
I have introduced simple signs, which are free, easily learned, and always available. I also have significant experience establishing picture exchange systems and programming high tech SGDs.
