I would first determine what sounds the child has in their repertoire and any words/word approximations the child is already trying. I like to discuss with the parents up to 5 target words/simple phrases the parents can realistically work on at home with their child, so there would be many opportunities for the child to practice throughout the day. The same words/phrases would also be targeted in the speech sessions. I like to have the parents be in the session/zoom in on the session so they can see the strategies I utilize (Bjorem speech sound cues, DTTC, Principles of Motor Learning). The parents can then see how the target sound/word/phrase is achieved. I find it helps parents to see their child be successful and see that their child can eventually produce the target words/phrases with given strategies. I then educate the family on which strategy would help the child achieve the word and they can attempt to practice it at home. I also like to come up with a concrete time (snack time, play time, or with specific toy) where they can practice the target word/phrase.
I have the parents either be in the session with me, or zoom in the session so they can see what we work on in each session. I ask how the "homework" went between sessions and where the struggles were. I ask specifically what sounds they are hearing the child do at home and provide a simple strategy that works for the child to practice at home. I also keep up with how they feel the target words/phrases are doing at home.
I have used it to help bridge the gap for children who shut down when the demand to imitate occurs. I find I only need it for a handful of sessions then the child starts attempting more verbally. I also use it for when I know the child has "a lot" to want to share and have it out as an option for them to search and pick out topic/category they want to discuss. I have also used it for more severe kiddos who will attempt to vocalize after the device says it for them.
