For a child with moderate to severe CAS, I use an approach that is research-based. The approach I like to use during my therapy sessions is called Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC). During this approach, we focus on producing appropriate movement during connected speech. Since many children with CAS have difficulties with vowels, prosody, alveolars, words with increasing lengths, etc., I make sure to include these components during our therapy sessions. A formal evaluation is first completed in order to determine the appropriate targets to help the child make progress. All therapy sessions include a lot of immediate reinforcement and high repetitions of practice to help the child with creating a solid motor plan.
I provide multiple resources to educate the parent on Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Once they have a solid understanding of this motor speech disorder, I teach them the strategies that we will incorporate in the therapy sessions and provide them with home packets to help with practicing at home. In most circumstance, the parent will sit in the session to observe the therapists cueing hierarchy/process.
I am familiar with using LAMP. I really like to use LAMP for children with CAS since it focuses on the principles of motor learning.
