Initially the therapy process begins with a phone consultation to determine the needs of the child. This is a get-to-know-you phone call to make sure that Little Speech House is the best place for your kiddo, or if there is somewhere else that would be better suited for your specific needs. After that, an evaluation is scheduled and completed with a written report provided The report includes: recommendation for therapy, therapy frequency, goals that address each specific need of the child, other recommendations and referrals. Following the evaluation, if it was recommended, therapy is scheduled at the recommended weekly frequency. At that point, an individualized therapy plan is created based on the current skills of the child that will maximize progress.
Parents are an integral part of the therapy process at Little Speech House. They are encouraged to sit in the therapy room and observe and participate throughout. Parents are so important and become a partner to the Speech Pathologist by learning and implementing the techniques and then encouraging carryover of skills to the home environment.
Oftentimes, kiddos with CAS have limited communication skills initially, so referrals for an AAC evaluation (AAC device) may be appropriate or low tech AAC (communication boards, word books, picture cards) may be sufficient. In therapy these two things are used the same way, using their high/low tech AAC to model the language spoken and encourage imitation of language.
