I work closely with each child and their family to provide an individualized, strengths based, and holistic approach to treatment. Since Apraxia is a motor speech disorder, I utilize a motor-based approach, incorporating Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing, PROMPT, visual, and verbal cues, and the Principles of Motor Learning. I get to know each child’s interests and incorporate them into therapy. I meet the child where they are and build on their strengths and successes to promote a growth mindset, increase motivation, and build self-esteem as we work on speech and communication.
I work closely with parents and caregivers to choose targets that are both within the child’s reach, as well as motivating and meaningful. We work together to choose words and phrases that are empowering to the child, related to their interests, family, and activities, and can help them express their wants and needs and advocate for themselves. When the child is ready for home practice, I work together with families to incorporate these targets into daily routines and activities.
There are many AAC options available to help kids communicate and express themselves. These include “low tech” options such as signing and picture communication symbols, and “high tech” options such as Proloquo2Go, Sono Flex and others. We will work together to find the best approach for your child.
