I like to work with parents to determine a core vocabulary list that is meaningful and relevant to the child and the parent. Sometimes, it's necessary to find approximations for words with structures that would be too complex for early targets. I then select a handful of those to target each session. Since different things work for different kids, sometimes a therapy session looks like the child and I sitting at the therapy table and doing lots of practice with 5-10 picture stimulus cards (like the Kauffman cards), and sometimes it looks like playing Pop-Up Pirate in the floor and working on just the word "pop" for the whole session. I incorporate strategies from DTTC, like multisensory cues and fading from us saying the word at the same time together to the child filling in the blank at the end of a sentence with the target word. I know that based on the principle of motor learning, it's best to practice practice practice the exact skill that you want a child to be able to do, and I try to do that the best I can while also making therapy something that my kids actually want to come and do.
