Family involvement is a crucial component of therapy. I have the parents/caregivers complete a Functional Communication Questionnaire to focus on meaning and functional words for the child. I will complete the System Analysis Observation to determine what PROMPT phoneme links I will target in sessions, based on the motor speech needs while including the most relevant and functional targets reported from parents. We will work on saying words and phrases together, while the child is given specific feedback about what errors need to be fixed. This can be given through tactile cueing, such as Dynamic Tactile and Temporal Cueing (DTTC) and PROMPT therapy, while giving specific verbal feedback (i.e. "remember to use a little jaw!"). Prior to sessions, the targets will be selected and then targeted throughout the session. It is of the utmost importance that the targets picked for therapy are words that are meaningful for the child and his/her family and will be used throughout the day.
Parents actively help select target words for therapy, by helping me identify the most functional, meaningful words to target. Parents are aware of specific vowels, consonants, syllables, or words that are being targeted in speech. I provide parents with a speech book of words to target at home for carryover outside of therapy sessions. Parent coaching is provided throughout the session.
I have used a variety of high tech AAC devices, such as LAMP, GoTalk NOW, and TouchChat. I have implemented low tech AAC such as PECS, topic boards, and visual sentence strips. I always accept verbal utterances first, but have AAC available for total communication and building language.
