These three modules provide introductory information for SLPs about working with children with CAS whose first language is not English. The modules discuss foundational information about bilingualism, assessment, and treatment for children with CAS.
In 2022, Apraxia Kids provided a free series of eight lectures for our apraxia community. This Lecture Series consisted of four live lectures designed for parents and caregivers, and four live lectures designed for SLPs and SLP Assistants. This recorded Lecture Series is now available for free viewing, and is an excellent resource for parents/caregivers who have a newly diagnosed or suspected CAS child, and clinicians looking for evidence-based information.
School-based speech pathologists evaluate, diagnose, and treat a diverse variety of disorders in the schools. Childhood apraxia of speech is one of those disorders which is frequently not adequately addressed in graduate programs. These sessions will offer ongoing training in a variety of ages to help school based therapists recognize and treat children with apraxia of speech. CEUs are available by completing demographic information and passing the quiz with 80% accuracy.

Tips From a Mom’s Homeschooling Experience

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) only occurs in roughly 1% of the population and more often than not, other issues are also diagnosed at some point including autism spectrum disorders (ASD), fine and gross motor difficulties, learning disorders, literacy difficulties, and hearing loss. These sessions are for both families and professionals and provide a more in-depth look at these co-occurring challenges that our children and families deal with and the importance of looking at the whole child during evaluation and treatment.

Research has shown that therapy for children with CAS needs to be grounded in the principles of motor learning and requires specific considerations for target selection, strategies, and a hierarchy of learning. These sessions will discuss specific strategies for families and professionals including home practice, facilitating communication in everyday activities, telepractice, and therapy strategies that therapists use with children with CAS.
