Treatment is individualized and based on motor learning principles. Much of the beginning work is on establishing rapport & trust with the child & family and helping the child to be more comfortable with playing together, exploring & making sounds. I also work early on with establishing visual attention with the child when encouraging imitation of sounds. I work with the family on developing a functional vocabulary based on the child's daily routines and developmental level. We work from the start on increasing the speech sound repertoire and systematically advancing to a variety of syllable shapes & sequences. I start where the child currently has success and then expand on it. I rely heavily on Edith Strand's techniques to include simultaneous imitation, slowed rate, and tactile/gestural cues. I will also incorporate use of the Kaufman cards. I use toys and activities to encourage lots of repetitions and practice and work towards generalization to the child's daily routines as he/she learns new words during the therapy session.
Parent participation is highly encouraged during the treatment sessions. Using coaching techniques, I share various strategies to encourage communication, imitation, and social skills. I provide home activity suggestions for the parent and rely on parent input as to the specific needs of the family and child. As the child begins to develop a vocabulary, I work together with the parent to encourage carry-over to daily routines and play activities in the home.
I work early on in the therapy process with encouraging use of gestures, joint attention, and actions to supplement the child's communication efforts. I also use sign language and/or pictures as appropriate to the child/family. A referral is made if the child is in need of a high-tech device which would then be incorporated into his/her therapy sessions, as well as, for at home use.
