Two of the most essential parts of my treatment approach include your child’s interests as well as family input in helping choose functional, meaningful target words. I love watching a child become more confident with each session. I incorporate their interests into our play-based therapy. My treatment includes a multi-sensory approach, including DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing) and Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST) and the Principles of Motor Learning, which have shown to be effective for children with CAS.
Parent involvement is essential in CAS. No one knows your child better than you. Together, we select target words that are functional in your home and motivating to your child. I think parent education is important – as a mom, I always want to understand the ‘why’ and ‘how’. I model cueing strategies and I provide parents with word lists to continue to target at home, so your child can make maximal gains. Living in a rural state, I have several families that spend hours on the road each week coming to our clinic. I have always had a deep appreciation for the effort CAS families put into their children’s speech therapy.
I firmly believe in multi-modal communication. I have used both low teach and high tech AAC within sessions, whenever needed.
