My therapy approach can be described as a multisensory approach to intervention. I use visual and verbal cuing to help children produce sounds and sequence sounds into words. I am family centered when it comes to selecting goals for therapy. I like to work on important words for the client and the family; as well as, family and names, so that children can be successful when communicating with family members. I also select goals that help to build the child’s repertoire of sounds and words overall. I feel strongly that parents should be part of the therapy process and that they should be provided with target words to practice at home between sessions.
It is important for parents to be a part of every therapy session so that they are able to practice the goals daily at home. When parents are present in the sessions they are better able to use the cuing/prompting that works best for their child at home. It also shows the child that it is important to practice with parents and not only the therapist.
I will also support clients and their families with AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) needs when required.
