My approach to speech therapy is neurodiversity-affirming, play-based, and child-led. Honoring and respecting neurodiversity, I view each child as a unique individual with their own strengths and communication styles. I prioritize creating a safe and inclusive space where every child's voice is valued and respected.
Incorporating play-based methods, my therapy sessions are designed to be engaging and enjoyable for the child. I believe that learning occurs most naturally through play, allowing children to express themselves creatively while practicing communication skills in a comfortable setting. Play-based activities not only facilitate language development but also help build confidence and a positive attitude toward communication.
At the heart of my approach is the child's autonomy and agency. I am dedicated to being child-led, meaning that I adapt my techniques and strategies based on the child's interests, pace, and preferences. By allowing the child to take the lead, I create a collaborative partnership where their active participation and choices guide the therapeutic journey.
Parent involvement is integral in speech therapy due to its ability to reinforce learning beyond therapy sessions. Parents can ensure consistent practice of speech exercises at home, promoting skill generalization to real-life situations. Their insight into their child's communication patterns helps tailor therapy approaches, expediting progress. Moreover, parents provide emotional support and motivation, creating a conducive environment for enhanced speech development.
I am a strong AAC advocate! I believe that AAC supports the development of verbal speech. I counsel parents in selecting an appropriate AAC system, whether lite, mid, or high-tech. All recommendations are highly personalized to the child. Lite-tech AAC includes printed communication boards or symbol charts. Mid-tech options include static display voice output devices. High-tech AAC devices include iPads or other electronic devices with robust vocabulary systems. My favorites include Tobii Dynavox Motor Plan, Proloquo, and Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP WFL). I can assist the family in the process of acquiring a dedicated AAC device through insurance, the DOE, or private funding.
