My therapy style is very child led and play based. I find this increases the child's participation in therapy and their overall communicative confidence. I incorporate the child's target phrases (that have been developed alongside parents and caregivers to be the most functional and motivating words/phrases) into their preferred play routine. I typically use DTTC, occasionally incorporating PROMPT if it is beneficial to the child. Frequent communication and observation between SLP and caregivers is essential.
From the beginning, parents and caregivers help give a background of the child's history and current communication style. Parents and SLP will collaborate to choose meaningful, functional target words or phrases to work on in therapy. These could be core words like "go," "on," "more," or "eat," or could be specific *MEANINGFUL* targets such as the name of a sibling or pet, favorite food, or TV show, etc.
I have trialed AAC devices with children with CAS and taught/modeled these devices to users, often as a supplement to verbal communication, and also as a clarification tool to solve communication breakdowns. If a listener does not understand what a child with CAS is saying, I help the child recognize the presence of a communication breakdown, and use low- or high-tech communication to clarify.
