I provide child-led therapy incorporating evidence-based strategies to allow the child to reach their goals and full potential. I incorporate children's preferred toys/activities into my treatment with the expectation of reaching 100 trials of a targeted word. I help a child with CAS learn the expectations of the speech room (watching SLPs mouth, engage with visual and gestural cues, etc.) in a fun and functional way. A therapy session may include 1-3 activities that allows the child to practice their targeted word(s) in a fun environment. I encourage family members to be active participants in therapy and communicate helpful strategies in various settings (e.g., home, school, in the community, etc.). It is important to me that I work with the family member and the child to create a meaningful word list that will increase functional communication in a variety of settings. I help my clients reach their goals by setting realistic goals and expectations.
I encourage families to sit in on sessions as much as possible. I may explain the therapeutic strategies I'm implementing in the session in real time. I allow time in my sessions for myself and the families to ask questions or express concerns or problems. I explain most clinical decisions to the families prior to implementing a new therapeutic treatment and listen to their input as their goals are important to me and my therapy process.
I have implemented AAC into my sessions for children as young as 2-years old. AAC is a great tool for children with CAS as it allows them to functional communicate with their family members are not around. I always provide family education regarding AAC and only implement AAC if the family understands and accepts the use of AAC.
