At Pathway Therapy Specialists, we utilize child-led, play-based methods to address the speech motor planning challenges related to Childhood Apraxia of Speech. We know that children are more likely to try difficult things when they are motivated and having fun, so that is always the goal! Practicing talking can be really hard for children with CAS, so we aim to make it as fun and family-friendly as possible. In order to get the most repetitions of targeted words each session, we carefully select our toys and activities to elicit many trials of the targeted sounds or speech movement patterns. We encourage caregivers to engage with us during sessions so that they can assist with speech word selection, observe the different cues used to achieve speech movements, and understand and implement the prescribed carryover activities between visits.
We strongly encourage parents to observe (and play with us!) during therapy sessions. Being hands-on during the sessions gives them an opportunity to practice the cueing or other skills that they will be using during carryover between visits, and allows me to provide feedback as appropriate. Each week, a specific carryover plan is provided that is individualized to their child's needs and interests.
For children with CAS who are building their expressive vocabulary, I may recommend low or high-tech AAC as a means to supplement their spoken language. In this instance, AAC is generally used in conjunction with the speech motor learning practice, with the goal being to ensure their child is able to say what they want to say, when they want to say it-- Even if they don't have the spoken words for it quite yet.
