My treatment approach involves implementation of augmentative communication systems (such as sign language, picture boards and/or speech generating devices) as appropriate along with use of PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) and use of DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing). Each therapy session is tailored to the child's individual needs and parent feedback and collaboration is encouraged from the start.
I ask parents from the start what their goals are for their child and am frequently asking them to provide me with meaningful words we can add to our therapy session as the child shows readiness. I enjoy having parents observe sessions if the child tolerates (doesn't get too distracted, and can maintain their focus on me) or if that isn't an option, I spend time after each session discussing our session and how their child performed. Home practice is frequently given with specific demonstrations from me.
I often start with low tech AAC such as picture boards and/or some simple signs such as "more" and "finished" to aid communication and then at our clinic we typically have loaner speech generating devices to try out programs such as "TouchChat", "LAMP Words for Life" or "Proloquo2Go" to name a few and then help parents obtain their own devices once the program that best meets the needs of the child is established.
