For a child with CAS, my therapy typically involves motor phoneme warm-ups and activities to work on specific motor patterns. Motor phoneme warm-ups usually consist of mass practice of a certain motor movement which is then carried over into an activity. Throughout both the warm-up and the activity, age appropriate and motivating items/games are incorporated. Therapy sessions typically target functional words that will impact the child's ability to communicate across a variety of settings. I typically try to work on 2-3 motor patterns in a single session, depending on the client's level of functioning as well as the session length. Therapy sessions involve multi-modal cueing and since I am PROMPT certified, I typically incorporate tactile-kinesthetic cueing. Parents are included in therapy sessions as needed and are consistently consulted and communicated with at the end of sessions.
Parents provide background information and discuss concerns at the start. Parents are a part of the process when it comes to determining functional words that would be important for a child's day to day life. Parents are given strategies to work on at home as is appropriate, and are consistently communicated with week to week after therapy sessions to ensure understanding of strategies, discuss progress, and go over any possible concerns.
I have used AAC with children with CAS to support their language growth and development while also working on their motor speech needs. I will work on AAC to expand current expressive language skills (such as increasing length of utterance or answering questions). At times motor speech difficulties impact a child's ability to make their wants and needs known so I always encourage AAC to ensure they are able to communicate these effectively. I have used AAC devices as well as simple picture boards depending on client needs.
