When I begin treatment with your child I'll first get a phonemic inventory and do an assessment that looks at syllable shapes your child can successfully produce with and without cueing. I'll look at which level of cueing in the DTTC hierarchy is necessary for your child to be successful. Together we will pick 5-7 meaningful word targets with new syllable shapes that contain phonemes in your child's repertoire. These are words that are meaningful and functional for your child to learn and practice on a daily basis. We will use motivating activities to keep your child's interest while practicing. We are going to get as many correct productions of these target words in sessions and you'll be there too so I can teach your how to help your child when I'm not there. The focus will be on movement between syllables (not sounds), prosody, and helping your child to become as independent with these words as possible.
Parents will learn the DTTC cueing hierarchy, other multimodal cueing, the rationale behind target words, and they will learn how to be confident supporting their child on a daily basis with their presence in therapy sessions.
AAC helps students communication, therapy apraxia helps children speak. I use AAC (both high tech and low tech) not only as an expressive means to communicate but also to support a child's receptive language/understanding. Children with apraxia often need both AAC and therapy for their motor based speech sound disorder.
