My therapy is individualized to meet the needs of each child. I incorporate the Principles of Motor Learning Theory into treatment. My approach includes careful consideration of target vocabulary, a focus on high repetition of targets, incorporation of multisensory (e.g., visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic) cues based on the child’s performance and provision of highly specific feedback, with a goal of fading cues and feedback over time and helping the child learn to recognize and correct their own errors. Each child’s sense of success and emotional well-being is of utmost importance to me as a clinician. I take time to establish rapport with children and spend a lot of time thinking about how to best motivate and support them on an on-going basis. I incorporate movement, individual interests, and a lot of fun and creativity into each therapy session. I am PROMPT trained and trained in the implementation of Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), and the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP).
I provide in-home diagnostic and therapeutic services, which allows me the unique ability to get to know children and their families in their natural environments. Parents are always encouraged to observe and participate in therapy sessions. I start every session by discussing challenges and successes experienced by the family since the previous session, and I end each session by reviewing a home intervention plan and answering questions. I incorporate parent concerns into treatment and consult with parents on selection of target vocabulary. I provide consistent explanations of what I am doing and why during therapy sessions. I keep my practice intentionally small so that I can provide highly individualized support to each family. I have experienced the world of pediatric occupational, physical, and feeding therapy as a parent, and I recognize the challenges (and joys!) that come along with that. My goal is to be a support to the entire family.
I place a great emphasis on helping children to understand the symbolism of language and the power of their language. This may involve early access to AAC and teaching early sign language to supplement verbal speech. I teach the importance of establishing a core set of vocabulary and I create low-tech picture communication systems for families to help increase communication. I collaborate with an AAC specialist when a more in-depth AAC evaluation is warranted.
