We offer a play-based intervention. We select important words (power words) for the family and the patient and we begin to work on them in blocks and more frequently. We use various techniques such as DTTC and PROMPT. We use fun materials that motivate the patient to production but above all to motor programming and planning.
Involvement of parents can make them feel more supported. It helps them understand that there’s an entire team that’s rallying behind them.
Providing an initial form of communication is of paramount importance. Because of this, AAC is a great alternative to enhance the client's communication and make the feel confident while they are in treatment. I have used picture exchange and high tech AAC (TD Snap, Touch Chat) to request wants, and needs.
