My therapy process is eclectic in nature as I have had the great fortune of training with some of the pioneers in the field of CAS over the years through a multitude of continuing education opportunities. I strongly believe in tapping into the integrated motor-planning approach that works best for each individual child. However, I have a strong preference and tend to find that most of my children have the best success with a combination of DTTC and visual/tactile cues such as PROMPT. I love to engage the family as much as possible in a fun and functional way so that carryover can be successful!
Parents are either directly involved in the therapy process by being in the room and participating throughout the session with their child (learning how to cue, etc.) or I save time to parent train at the end of the session where I bring them in and go over what we worked on so that they can follow-up at home.
I have use low tech picture boards, PODD books, communication rings etc. with some of my children with CAS and a few of mine have had higher tech devices provided by the county or public schools that I have been able to utilize in treatment as well. This is definitely not my strongest area - I find that parents generally want me to work on verbal speech and are not wanting me to use their time on AAC despite parent education in this area.
