Therapy for children with CAS focuses on improving the child's ability to make accurate movement gestures for speech, in other words we focus on the movements and transitions our mouths need to make to produce speech. Our therapy sessions are shorter in length but more frequent, maybe 2-3 times per week. During our sessions we will practice our target movement patterns numerous times. I use different a variety or tools to help your child be successful, including visual, gestural, and tactile cues, as well as direct modeling. We will work together to select meaningful words that will empower your child and help them to be successful communicators. Each child with CAS is unique. We will work together to learn their strengths and interests to create motivating and successful therapy sessions. While our focus in therapy will be practicing these movement patterns, we will also work on other ways to communicate, if needed. This could include gestures (pointing), some simple signs, using pictures, or app on a tablet.
At the start of therapy, I work with parents to select our target words for therapy based on a number of factors, but one of those factors is meaningful words for the child and family. Parents help select the words that will empower their child. I also encourage parents to actively participate in the therapy session, to see how hard their child is working and to learn different strategies they can implement outside of therapy.
I like to say communication is power. If a child is having a difficult time communicating verbally, we can use a variety of other methods that will give the child success with communicating and reduce some frustration they may be experiencing due to a difficulty with communicating. I have extensive experience with with different types of AAC to help children communicate. I have taught children some gestures and basic signs, implemented picture books/boards to communicate with families, and I have used high tech speaking apps on a tablet to empower children to communicate while we practice our movement patterns for speech.
