Therapy for a child with CAS will involve choosing a set of high-value functional words and phrases and embedding them into play while providing the right level of support the child needs to be successful. Activities will be set up in a way to encourage maximum target production opportunities. Treatment will include the principles of motor learning and follow the DTTC hierarchy.
Parents are such a valuable part of the therapy team! They know their child best and can provide the best support for choosing functional speech targets, providing insights into what will help the child be most regulated and motivated, and be part of carrying over speech and/or AAC practice throughout daily activities.
I have utilized both low and high tech AAC supports for children with CAS, including modified pictured exchange systems, speech generating programs on iPads, and dedicated speech generating devices. I have found that use of AAC can decrease communicative frustration, increase overall communication success, and positively supports motor speech development.
