During my therapy sessions, I use a play-based model and incorporate the child's interests. For example, if the child is working on the word "me" and the child enjoys cars, I would bring cars and a ramp for our activity. I might ask "who wants to roll the car down the ramp" and have them practice "me" in response prior to each turn with the car. If the child is working on multisyllabic words and enjoys basketball, we may shoot hoops while we practice the word "basketball". If the child loves their dog "Coco", we might hide pictures of Coco around the room and search for the pictures while we say the word. I choose target words that are meaningful to the child and family. To help the child become successful with productions, I use different forms of cueing and allow for breaks as needed to ensure the child stays engaged, motivated, and has fun.
Parents and caregivers are an integral part of the therapy process. I encourage families to sit in on therapy sessions to observe what is being practiced. I educate parents on the motor learning process and the reason behind my use of simultaneous productions, cues, and feedback. As a mother, I understand how busy parenthood is, so it is extremely important to me to make strategies simple to integrate into daily routines. I provide video examples to families modeling specific cues and targets that they can refer back to while practicing at home.
With AAC, I have experience using high-tech devices such as TouchChat, Proloquo2Go, GoTalkNow, C Board, among others. In addition, I have supported families with low-tech options such as picture boards that can be created at home. AAC is a great way to support a child’s language development while we work on speech production. It helps the child communicate their wants and needs if their speech is not understood.
