I love to structure sessions that are person-centered and involve the child's interest. I tend to be a "high-energy" clinician that enjoys making even the most simple tasks and items fun and engaging. I appreciate the challenge and art of incorporating evidence-based practice into motivating therapy sessions. My treatment centers around the principles of motor learning and using teaching strategies that constantly change based on your child's performance. We incorporate words that are meaningful to your child's life and maximize practice opportunities through engaging activities.
As a therapist, I believe parents are our biggest asset. My goal is for parents to fully understand the reason for why we are doing what we are doing. I feel when parents are knowledgeable about the goals for intervention, outcomes improve significantly. When determining target words for practice within sessions, I like to use a person/family-centered model. I ask parents to list the most important words, labels, names, etc in their child's environment. The more meaningful and purposeful words to a child's life, the better.
I do not hesitate to use light-tech AAC when appropriate and necessary for your child. It is so important to provide access to communication and reduce frustration at an early age, through whatever modality necessary. Based on the child's performance and progress, I collaborate with my colleagues who specialize in AAC when a high-tech device may be warranted.
