Therapy for CAS will focus on treating movement of speech, not individual sounds. It is important to assist your child’s motor planning system with accurate productions of targeted words and syllable shapes. This typically begins by providing maximum cueing to get accurate movement and fading cues over time. I include principles of motor learning into my therapy which includes a high number of trials, the organization of therapy, and feedback on performance. I believe in using evidence- based treatments for your child. Examples of treatment for CAS may include Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) or Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST).
Parents and caregivers are a big part of the therapy process. It is important for parents to understand the proper cueing and techniques to help their child be successful at home. Children with CAS need a high number of accurate production for targeted words that are chosen for therapy. This means that parents will need the tools to assist with more structured practice or with random practice of targeted words in the home environment. It is also important for parents to be involved in the process of choosing appropriate therapy targets. Through clinical assessment and parent collaboration, we can choose appropriate and functional targets for your individual child’s needs.
AAC may not be needed for every child with CAS. For some children, AAC can be used to bridge the communication gap when a child is not yet an efficient communicator and needs a way to communicate their wants and needs. As a child’s verbal speech progresses and the motor planning system becomes efficient, the use of AAC can be faded out.
