I truly believe in the quote, "Play is the work of a child." As we work together to help your child form new motor planning connections in their speech production, we will make sure your child is doing so in their most natural environment - play! This gives your child the opportunity to practice what they are learning in the most effective way. Together, we will select targets that are most functional for your child's present communication while building their syllable shapes and sound inventory in order to progress toward more intelligible speech.
Parent involvement is a key part of the child's progress in speech therapy. Parents will be involved in identifying where and when communication breakdowns are occurring for the child, and in turn aiding in the development of speech targets. Parents are also encouraged to be involved in every therapy session. Together we will develop multi-sensory cues that are specific to your child's needs so that they can be used in all aspects of their life.
I have experience working with a wide variety of children using AAC devices. Both low tech (printed out pictures) and high tech (iPad) can be extremely helping in allowing a child to communicate wants, needs, comments, exclamations, and questions. Our goal with AAC is to allow a child to communicate every single time they want to, even if they aren't able to say the words. Teaching a child core words will allow them to communicate in a variety of settings and more specific vocabulary will be added based on a child's individual interests and needs.
