After a comprehensive dynamic evaluation to determine the severity and response to various types and levels of cueing, the SLP and the parent(s) together select target words that are both meaningful in the child's world and appropriate for the child's motor speech skills. My therapy uses bursts of target words with dynamic (changing based on the needs of the child) cueing followed by short breaks. When possible I incorporate play based therapy and always include parent training. I use verbal, visual, and tactile (touch) cues to facilitate successful motor speech planning practice.
Parents are involved throughout the evaluation and treatment process. It is important for the parents to be involved with target selection and encourage carryover at home with practice exercises. Parent training is always a part of my therapy. Consistency across communication partners is key in building a child's motor planning and confidence when speaking.
AAC may include pictures, sign, or possibly speech-generating devices. AAC can rapidly increase the child's ability to communicate their wants and needs and can lead to greater language development while working on the child's motor planning.
