Initially, when a child comes in, I talk with the parents about their concerns for communication and also how their child interacts with the world and other people. Once I have a good idea of how the child will react to therapy based on the principles of motor learning (multiple repetitions for a child who is moving quickly around the room will need to be presented differently than for a child who attends easily to more repetitive tasks), then we can move forward with an initial assessment, using a motor speech diagnostic, the DEMSS and an articulation test. Once I have a better idea of where the child is having difficulty, we create a treatment plan based on what level the child is demonstrating breakdowns in his or her movement patterns. I do much of my work in a gym area with a swing and slide, which allows for increased movement opportunities. Having trained in PROMPT and studied the DTTC techniques, I am able to make clinical judgments based on what types of cueing a particular child might need (tactile cues, verbal or visual cues, etc.)
