For a child with CAS, frequent and repetitive practice of functional words is shown to be the best approach. It is important to create a sound inventory for them and build their word targets off of this. With my younger clients, I use a play-based approach to make it more interactive and fun and thus they are more motivated to participate. This also aids in the generalization of words and sounds. Reinforcing the child looking at your mouth and imitating target words and sounds during play is imperative to apraxia therapy.
Parent involvement is key! They are imperative in helping to choose which words and sounds to be addressed and practicing and carrying these skills over at home and throughout the child’s world. Parents are updated after each session on progress or they can observe therapy.
It is important to give children with apraxia a method to communicate, whether that be verbally, signs, or with an AAC device. With my clients with apraxia, I have used signs and more high-tech AAC devices to help them communicate their thoughts and feelings when there is a breakdown in communication. This is to help reduce frustration and also get their input and point of view on their therapy and other topics and give them a voice.
