I recommend frequent, short therapy sessions for most clients (2-3 times weekly for 30 minutes). When working with children with CAS I use a variety of treatment approaches, based primarily on the principles of Dynamic Temporal and Tacticle Cueing (DTTC) and principles of motor learning. I work together with parents to establish a target word list for therapy sessions, to try and make sure targets are as functional as possible for the child and their family. I incorporate PROMPT placement techniques and visual cues (such as Bjorem Sound Cue cards) as needed to help promote correct word productions. Additionally, I emphasis augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), such as signs, communication boards, and high tech devices, as appropriate and will work with families to implement AAC at home.
Parents are involved in each therapy session, helping to select treatment target words which are meaningful for their child and family. Additionally, I encourage parents to implement AAC and alternative communication strategies at home. Once target words are mastered during therapy sessions, parents begin to independently practice these words at home with their child.
I believe that AAC is a critical tool for children with CAS. I use a variety of both high and low tech AAC, depending on what works best for the individual client and family. Some of my clients use manual signs, while others use low tech communication books which I customize for each client. When a child has access to a high tech device such as an iPad and has shown success with this method, I will use applications such as My First AAC or Proloquo2go. I teach parents how to use AAC devices and strategies at home outside of the therapy session, to maximize their child's ability to communicate.
