I typically begin by targeting phonation in children who are minimally verbal, using their existing speech repertoire as a foundation for sound development. Based on the child’s sound inventory, I follow a developmental sound hierarchy and incorporate blocked and randomized practice, focusing on vowel and consonant-vowel training. Gradually, I introduce more complex sound patterns and increase the focus on sound motor planning exercises.
Parents play a key role in supporting their child's progress. To help carry over skills at home, a home program with simple, targeted activities will be provided. Parents are also invited to join the last 10 minutes of each session to observe the strategies being used and build confidence in using them at home.
I often use AAC alongside verbal therapy for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), as part of a total communication approach. AAC is used to model language and support learning in multiple ways. While the main focus is helping the child communicate successfully, I also take into account both the child’s immediate needs and the goals that parents have for their child’s communication.
