Augmentative communication plus shaping verbal productions. Treatment is more play based and naturalistic with younger children and more structured with older children. Care is taken to provide the level of cueing needed and not more. Cues are faded as the child receives more practice and is more independent. Varied practice is emphasized and prosody is targeted along the way.
Parents are present in every session at the beginning of therapy (first few months is common but this varies), and then I typically work 1:1 with the child and speak with the parents following each session. Parents will often be brought in periodically throughout as the program changes so parents are aware of and understand the modifications- new targets, cueing procedures, etc.
I have used picture binders, simple sign language, and also voice output devices.
