The first step to therapy is building rapport. It is my responsibility to build trust by creating a positive, rewarding environment that encourages children to be confident communicators. For each child on my caseload, I provide intensive and frequent speech therapy (4+ times a week) using the evidence based Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) approach.
Parents/guardians are always welcome to join therapy sessions. Working collaboratively with parents/guardians is an essential part of CAS therapy. Together we choose functional targets (words), edit AAC devices to the child's personal needs, share resources, and communicate daily. If a parent/guardian cannot attend a session, I send video clips of the child practicing at school. I have found these videos to be helpful for the adult and motivating for the child!
I am an advocate for all forms of AAC. AAC should always be accessible because it empowers children by giving them confidence to communicate. Most of the children on my caseload with a CAS diagnosis use a high tech AAC device to augment (add to/in addition to) their spoken language. I am most familiar with the LAMP Words for Life and TouchChat programs. It is my job as a speech therapist to educate teachers/staff/parents about the importance of frequently modeling on AAC devices throughout the day; not just at school!
