My therapy approach for my clients with CAS is a mix of multiple different therapy styles with evidenced based treatment approaches. For example, I will let my clients lead the session and follow their own interests. The language and speech targets we will use are highly motivating to my clients because it is typically about their interests and actions in play. I will utilize principles of motor learning and DTTC-style cueing (evidence based treatment approaches for CAS) to shape speech targets and encourage consistency. My families are involved in treatment and selection of speech targets as well. Parents are taught cueing strategies and provided with homework to practice outside of therapy sessions.
Parents are present to observe and participate in sessions if appropriate for the client. Parents are taught cueing strategies, current strengths and difficulties of their child's speech, and parents are provided with homework to address therapy targets at home.
I love using AAC with my families. I have watched quiet, timid children with CAS blossom into confident multi-modal communicators (verbal and AAC). I encourage AAC to begin early to increase communication confidence. After all, the majority of my clients with CAS have wonderful thoughts, stories, and ideas to share, but the are unable to express these ideas due to difficulties in motor planning and programming. I utilize low-tech images and communication boards with clients to identify interests and establish clear communication while simultaneously working on speech targets. I utilize high-tech AAC in a similar way. I will also use high-tech AAC to assist in clarifying speech messages. Clients will navigate and express their intended message on their device, and I will help shape the speech production to ensure accuracy in both AAC and verbal communication.
