I have studied CAS extensively over the past 20+ years.
In my private practice, I use a combination of DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing) and PROMPT. Sessions are typically 30 minutes, minimum 2 times a week (more if possible, depends on family situation). I do not have any employees; children are always treated directly by me.
I monitor progress carefully and change targets and goals accordingly. I always include targets that are functional for the child and the family. This is the best way to make an impact and keep everyone motivated and moving forward together. Keeping the child motivated is so important!
I encourage parents to join me and their child in the therapy room every session. Parent involvement makes the process more effective, efficient, and better for everyone. If a parent cannot join the session, I will find the best way to communicate with the parent so that we can work together toward our common goals. When appropriate, I provide opportunities for practice at home. Some parents are craving more information, in these cases I direct them to evidence-based resources that provide accurate information. I have some parents who want to get ahead of the curve, and in these cases I provide ideas on what they can do now to help mitigate potential literacy difficulties down the road.
I have always had great success with sign language. Because I learned sign language when I was a parent of a child with CAS, it is natural for me to incorporate sign into therapy; and it is easy for me to teach parents how to teach their own children at home (in therapy isn't enough).
