I value family/caregiver involvement in therapy as I believe the most progress and practice happens outside the therapy session and that family involvement is key to making big strides in speech. I follow motor learning principles and utilize visual, verbal, and tactile cueing. Sessions are heavy on drill (high # of repetitions), but also heavy on fun because these kiddos are working so hard! I take a flexible approach and am always considering how to improve my therapy approach to keep it engaging and motivating for the child. For young children who are unable to attend to drill at a table, I get creative and think of whatever "game" I can to get in as many speech productions as possible. Although often limited by insurance requirements, I try to see children with CAS for at least 3 sessions a week.
As mentioned above, parent involvement is critical in my treatment sessions. This includes helping provide case history and providing input on high frequency therapeutic target words. I also ask that parents sit in on all my sessions so that they can be part of their child's therapy successes and learn how to provide cues at home during their child's home practice. I teach parents how to do the same cueing that I use so they can cue in the same manner at home. I also have parents complete a daily home program with their child to facilitate faster motor learning and generalization.
I often use low-tech AAC supports including sentence strips, visual choice boards, and visual schedules. I've worked with various vendors to secure high tech AAC devices for children and have experience using various high tech apps including Talk Path, TD Compass, Sonoflex, and LAMP.
