Therapy will meet your child where they are at and will address the whole child with communication and speech at the forefront. A collaborative approach ensures your all of your child's needs are met during each session. Therapy for CAS is intensive (at least two days per week) and initially addresses functional communication through speech and/or augmentative and alternative communication if needed. As a parent, you will receive direct training on how to support your child's communication during this stage at home and in the community. At the same time, we will work towards getting ready to intensively target speech through motivating activities that are carefully tailored to your child's strengths and weaknesses and will gradually build your child's skills with motor gestures/movements needed for speech. As your child grows in confidence and becomes ready, we will intensively target the motor movements your child needs to be a successful speaker. Parents will receive training to support their child's speech in the home and community as well as training to support challenges related to supporting their child when they become frustrated or aware of their challenges with speech. Families will be directed to external resources to improve their knowledge about CAS so they can become their child's best advocate. Consultation and collaboration will occur with other people on the child's team including teachers, school SLPs, OTs, PTs, etc.
