We are a small private pediatric practice in Garden Grove, CA. We offer individual speech and language services. When treating Childhood Apraxia of Speech, I utilize different evidence based programs that follow Principles of Motor Theory to develop an individualized approach for each child who has CAS. I use Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) is a program which emphasizes improvement of motor speech skills through a high level of strategic cueing, and steadily fading cues as the child becomes more independent with targeted words. Target words are chosen based on factors such as current sound inventory, functionality to increase functional communication and early success in therapy. In addition, I am a PROMPT trained Clinician, so I am able to offer which a tactile-kinesthetic (touch and feel) approach where hand placement on the child’s face is implemented to guide his/her jaw, lips, and tongue to move correctly to form words.
We coach parents to be confident in their ability to be a part of the intervention team. I always to encourage parents/caregivers to sit in observe and participate with sessions. I will provide models and explanations of strategies during the sessions. In addition, I always supply parents with our target list of words to facilitate generalization carryover to your child’s home environment.
I take a multimodal communication approach early in therapy, to provide functional communication to the child, model language and reduce frustration. I use both high-tech systems on iPad's or other dedicated devices, as well as low-tech systems, such as sign language and picture systems as needed. I carefully examine the individual needs and skill sets of a in order to determine an appropriate route if AAC is needed.
