Each child is a person, and I first like to learn about them. I like to find their interests, strengths, and weakness before building my treatment plan. In addition, I like to get an understanding of what daily life looks like for a family, so that I can build a home program that fits their routines. Family members and the child are active participants in therapy. Parents and I will keep on-going conversations about how they feel their child is making progress and how they feel about implementing speech therapy tools at home.
Parents are heavily involved in my family-centered care model. Any and all caregivers in the child’s life are welcome to come to sessions, where I will coach them through the strategies and explain the reasoning behind them in order to better understand what a child is experiencing. I believe a home program aids in a child’s progress to becoming a successful communicator.
AAC is considered at the evaluation for all patients with CAS. Caregivers and I will have an ongoing discussion to choose what fits each child's needs. I have included AAC in treatment plans for children with severe CAS, shy personalities, or as a stepping stone for high repetition of words. AAC is one of my passions, and I am actively growing my specialty in this area. I have experience with working with a variety of AAC methods, including low-tech (i.e. pictures/communication board) and speech generating devices (i.e. iPads, LAMP).
