Therapy for a child with CAS needs to be highly individualized for every client. After a thorough dynamic motor speech assessment and creation of appropriate and functional goals, therapy will include multisensory cues to facilitate the client's speech needs. If CAS is severe enough, we need to consider and implement augmentative and alternative communication in conjunction with targeted oral speech. The best outcomes for children with CAS include early and frequent practice. Family involvement in therapy is crucial. Depending on the level of the child, therapy may begin at the syllable level, but we never target sounds in isolation. Therapy involves specific syllable/word targets to help the child develop and refine planning and execution of speech.
If possible, I like the parents to attend the therapy session with their child, especially in the early stages of therapy. This helps them be a participant in the therapy and enables me to educate them on how CAS therapy works and what they can do at home to facilitate communication for their child. This is also a good time to get information on what is and what isn't working outside of therapy.
I have used low tech communication for pre-verbal children including pictures, core words board, communication books (including real highly motivating/familiar pictures) in combination with targeting oral speech. I also have a handful of children with CAS and other developmental disabilities on my caseload who use high tech AAC devices in conjunction with oral speech.
